Who I Am
As an Instructional Designer and professional Anthropologist (Ph.D. with 34 years in the field), I am passionate about exploring problems, gaining insights from stakeholders, and working collaboratively to develop the best possible learning solutions. I have a proven track record of professionalism; acting responsibly and with integrity are my core values. I am committed to facilitating learning in diverse settings and have successfully managed both large and small projects.
In this phase of my professional life, I am focused on Instructional Design as it allows me to leverage my understanding of human dynamics, engage in problem-solving, and get creative with technology. An avid learner, I delight in exploring new interests and am particularly drawn to issues of healthcare and workplace dynamics.
I am ready to help you with an in-depth needs analysis, work with your experts and/or do research to design and build your learning solution, and assess the effectiveness of our solution at multiple points. Shorter- term development projects are also of interest. I am proficient in Articulate Rise and Storyline for your e-Learning needs along with Canva, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
What an Anthropologist Brings to Instructional Design
How does an anthropology background provide an edge in Instructional Design? Anthropologists are trained observers of the human condition. We contextualize issues, seeing the interconnectedness of individuals and groups within a complex social framework. This perspective provides an insightful approach to human problems leading to effective learning solutions.
My Approach and Process for Developing Learning Solutions
My approach stresses: 1) the importance of clearly understanding the business problem and desired outcome (What's the nature of the issue the client needs to address? What has been tried before? Are there underlying factors?); 2) an understanding of the audience (Who are the learners? What motivates them? What do they already know?); and 3) feedback as a collaborative process. The amount of interaction with stakeholders is driven by many factors, but even in the most time-restricted contexts, where a simple ADDIE model may be most appropriate, these three aspects are the key to success. When possible, a more interactive working model using SAM can provide greater alignment of outcomes with client priorities while addressing stakeholder concerns more collaboratively. In any project, I find clear communication, encouraging progressive, iterative feedback and a transparent workflow that aligns with clients’ needs provide the best outcomes. I embrace flexible working strategies that are responsive to a wide array of clients' needs.
How I Work with People
I pride myself on fostering a collaborative work environment characterized by mutual respect and open communication. By actively listening and valuing diverse perspectives, I ensure that every team member feels heard, appreciated, and part of the solution. My goal is always to drive projects forward efficiently, leveraging our collective strengths to achieve successful outcomes.
Life Outside of Work
I live with a man and a dog in the wilds of west-central Illinois on the edge of the Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area where we garden, fish, and enjoy nature. I also travel with friends and family.
